Moodle Course Quick Edit Bar

Today I finished working on the quick course edit bar.  The bar appears once the "Turn editing On" button is selected.  The bar drops down beneath the breadcrumb trail to reveal 3 of the most common settings that our tutors have problems finding under the course settings.

Apologies if you have emailed me recently!

Apologies if you have emailed me recently through my website form.  Gmail had been applying the spam filter to them and deleted them on my behalf.  Sadly I may have never received your emails so please don't think I am ignoring you.  If you have emailed me recently with a query then please do so again, or email me direct at lewis.carr@gmail.com.

Many thanks.

Microsoft Live Services Plugin for Moodle

The new code released by Microsoft allows users to log in using their LIVE ID and integrate their calendar events and email in Moodle.  As Martin Dougiamas noted, LIVE uses the same API's as Exchange Server so integrating into a private college exchange server should be fairly straight forward. Moodle Task list enhances MyMoodle Page

Today I created a Moodle Task List (MTL) which further enhances the custom MyMoodle page.

The Moodle Task List works by checking a series of database queries to see whether or not a student (or staff member) has completed a certain activity or visited a certain page.

The queries are modular and extra queries can easily be "bolted" on to the list.

Moodle - Online user campus location and graph

My online users page is proving to be very popular amongst our students, the page receives almost 4800 visits each week.

Working on the cloud

Last weekend my external USB hard drive lost the will to live. It turns out the heads have gone. The irony is that I bought this drive to back up my photos, videos and music so they were separate from my internal drive should a disaster occur.

A backup is only really as good as the time it was backed up. So although I do backup photos to DVD there is a short period of time where there is only 1 copy of a folder/file on my live drive until the next backup. Unfortunately for me, the drive died before a recent backup so I lost a fair few files. Read more »

Apache error: winnt_accept: Asynchronous AcceptEx failed.

Last week our production server (windows 2003 Server, Apache, PHP) decided to start acting rather strangely. The instability was tracked down to a conflict with eAccelerator and the php Oracle drivers.

After updating the Oracle drivers we were left with a new problem. Occasionally Apache would crash and report the following error message:

winnt_accept: Asynchronous AcceptEx failed.

After spending some time on Google I managed to find a fix.
Simply make these changes to the Apache httpd.conf file: Read more »

RSC JISC Moodle User Group May 1st 09 Report

The RSC JISC Moodle User group on Friday 1st May 2009 was once again very well attended - and there were some new faces too.  There has been lots of Moodle theme improvements by many of the member colleges.

Leeds College of Music have been using the 'Page Module' to good effect and Steve Dale from Education Bradford was on hand once again to show us some rather exciting content generation resources. Read more »
